It had been a long time since I’d had oatmeal. Well, that I could remember, anyway. Aldona made it great, even sprinkling brown sugar on top as a garnish. She fed it to me, but eating it was more effort than I realised, and I was asleep soon after. Before I knew it, morning shone through the skylight, and some of my strength had returned.

Aldona rarely left my side as I recovered. I kept expecting a husband or boyfriend to walk in and start asking questions, but nobody did. The lady herself moved around the place with a grace I wasn’t used to seeing from the other women in my life. It was like she feared disturbing me. Like she was making the rounds through a hospital ward at night.

“You were a doctor in your homeland?” I asked.

“From Nebronga, yes. It is far north of Lafuzin,” Aldona replied.

“I get the impression that you did it for a long time.”

“You are observant. Yes. I did it for many years. I was head doctor on night shift.”

“What happened to you?”

Aldona sat on the small couch with a sigh. The lever-action shotgun had been moved out of sight, likely because she no longer saw me as a threat.

“Same thing that happen to most countries abroad. Civil war. One that no other countries want to get involved with.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you by asking,” I said, but she held up a hand.

“It is fine. I don’t talk about it often. I was one of many who lost much. Coming here eases pain, but it’s still there.”

I nodded as much as my own pain would allow. She had no idea how right she was.

“Do you live in Whitport?” Aldona asked.

“No. Scarlett… and I came from Shale City to deal with this case.”

Aldona folded her arms. “Why? Why involve yourself in this?”

“A man… hired us to help with it. A journalist.”

Aldona scoffed. “Journalists. Most loathsome people.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

Aldona stared at her left hand, her thumb rubbing the bottom of the ring finger. “When war broke out, journalists took pictures and wrote stories. I saw them change how dead bodies lay in the mud to get best photo. They write fantasies for their sites and blogs. People believe it. It was sickening.”

I watched her talk and saw the pain trickling from her eyes. Aldona’s mouth moved like she was trying to form more words, but she squinted at my wound dressing and got up.

“I need to change your bandages,” she said, walking to a cabinet beside my bed.

I lay still as Aldona removed my lower dressing, the one covering the lesser of the wounds. The bruising around it was ugly, but the stitches were elegant work. Aldona applied a fresh, adhesive dressing, making sure all ends were stuck down with gentle touches.

“I need you to sit for this, please. It won’t hurt so much,” she requested.

Nodding, I struggled to raise myself. Aldona took my hand and pulled gently, bringing me forward just enough to lessen the discomfort.
